Thermage is a non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedure that is used to reduce wrinkles as well as smooth and tighten skin. It works by utilising the skins own protein collagen which often breaks down as people age. It works by using radiofrequencies to heat the lower layers of your skin whilst maintaining a cooler temperature on the top layers to ensure it is not damaged. This application of heat causes the collagen in your dermis to tighten; also the heat encourages the skin to produce more collagen itself.
Typically a Thermage treatment takes around sixty minutes to treat the whole face and less if just a section is being treated. Prior to a treatment, a local anaesthetic is applied to the area of the face or body to be treated. The skin is then treated with a cooling spray and then a hand piece is run over the area of the body to be treated. The patient feels a deep down but momentary heating sensation in the skin. The treatment is not considered to be painful but, some discomfort may be felt by the patient. After the treatment, patients may experience a tightening sensation. Once the treatment is complete the patient is able to continue with their days activities and no sunblock is required.
Some patients may notice an immediate tightening effect around the treated area. However for most patients the results become visible over the following weeks with most noticing the effect between a few weeks and three months after the treatments. Some patients will continue to notice improvements for up to twelve months. The effects of the treatment usually last between two and five years, and there needs be an absolute minimum of six months between treatments.
Thermage is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. In addition, the following conditions are not compatible with the treatment; diabetes, heart conditions, pacemakers, hearing implants or anyone with metal devices in their skin. Thermage is not suited to patients who have especially sensitive skin. As all Thermage practitioners are fully trained, if you have any concerns about your suitability for the treatment you should discuss it with them. Thermage can be successfully used on different skin types.
